What is a Steak Sandwich?
This juicy steak sandwich recipe is quick, flavorful, and perfect for busy weeknights. Made with thin sirloin, sautéed veggies, melty cheese, and mayo!
Steak sandwiches are made with a thin cut steak, I like to get the thin cut sirloins from the store. They are cost effective and they cook really quickly. Becasue the steak is so thin they will cook in just minutes so you will want to keep an eye on them to cook/grill them to your liking. But, they will make for a delicious and healthy meal under 20 minutes!
Thin cut sirloin is often more affordable than thicker cuts and cooks quickly, making it perfect for budget-conscious meals. You can also stretch the servings by loading up on sautéed veggies and using sandwich rolls or everyday bread slices you already have, making this a steak dinner on a dime!
Topping off the steak sandwich will be your favorite type of cheese, we use Muenster around here because it has a nice stretch when it is pulled and has a great buttery flavor that really complements the steak. Then you will want to saute some peppers and onions. To make these cook quickly, slice them thinly, just remember thinner things cook faster so don’t walk away from them! Next, layer on a thinly sliced tomato and add a little of your favorite mayo to add some sauce and you have a quick sandwich that you and your family will love!
Why You’ll Love This Steak Sandwich
Thin cut steaks are very quick to cook. They take minutes on the grill and minutes to marinade if that is what you want to do. However, I usually just use our favorite seasoning salt to flavor these and make them quickly.
These sandwiches can be cooked to your liking and will be packed with juicy, savory, steak flavor on a dime.
When you add the muenster cheese and sauteed vegetables you will be amazed at how this levels it up. The texture and flavors really make each other pop.
Kids don’t like peppers and onions? No worries, after sauteeing them put them on the side of their sandwich. This way they can try it without “ruining” their sandwich if they don’t like it. This can help them taste it and learn more about their favorite flavors. This is what we did at our house and boy did they fall in love, making this a great way to get some extra vegetables into their daily diets.
Going out to eat isn’t a neccessity when you have the ingredients for this sandwich on hand at home. You will have a restaurant quailty meal in minutes and save yourself a ton of money by making these at home.
Tips for the Best Steak Sandwich
Using thinly sliced sirloin will result in fast cooking, so keep an eye on your meat as it grills, pan fries, or broils. It will literally take minutes!
Cut the peppers and onions thinly and start sauteeing them before cooking the meat. This way you will have perfectly cooked peppers and onions even though the meat cooks quickly.
To make your steak sandwich a little fancier try toasting your bread or your bun. This will add a little flavor and texture to the meal.
When cooking steak, it is best to let it rest before cutting into it or biting it. This will let the juices stay inside even on a thin steak.
To add a little more creaminess add a thin layer of your favorite sauce like mayo, chipotle ranch, avocado, or Greek yogurt.

Store any leftover steak and veggies seperately in air tight containers like these. This will keep them fresh until you are ready to eat them again.
When reheating the steak do small bursts in the microwave to keep the edges from over cooking. If using a skillet you will get the best texture but keep an eye on it as it cooks fast.
You can also easily cut the veggies during your meal prep planning day and store them in a container to quickly throw in a pan when you want to make the sandwiches fresh and hot.
